A waste heat recovery system operates with your central air conditioner or heat pump by recovering heat normally exhausted to the outdoors. As long as your central system is operating, this "free" heat is used to heat water. The backup electric or gas system provides hot water when the air conditioner is off.

An average family of four could save from $115 to $170 per year, or 50% of a home's water heating costs with an HRU. The waste heat recovery unit captures waste heat from your air conditioner or heat pump. So, the central system must operate for the HRU to produce hot water. In most Florida homes, the air conditioning operates at least eight months of the year. If installed on a heat pump, the HRU will produce some hot water in the winter also.

Installation costs for an HRU vary between $500 and $700. If you save $170 per year, the system pays for itself in less than four years, which is a very good investment.   Again, depending your your usage of hot water the system may pay for itself in a much shorter period of time, making it an excellent investment.
